Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. - Colossians 3:1
One of our favorite activities is helping to get a Young Life camp ready for summer teen aged guests. It helps that the camp is set in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Each day, we work hard with fellow Christians, and each evening we meet for praise and worship. It might just be what God intended life to be for all of us when He first created Adam and Eve.
We were challenged by one camp speaker to study and memorize Colossians 3:1-17 during our week of work. I confess that I didn’t get it all memorized, but the passage has stayed with me as a model for Christian life. Make no mistake, we are saved by grace alone, but we are directed in Scripture to change our lives as a response to the death and resurrection of Christ.
It is so very easy to get caught up in the world we live in. Our jobs, friends, families and hobbies all compete for our precious time and it becomes so easy to model our lives after earthly pursuits. There is no problem with these earthly things unless they become higher priorities than our life with Christ. God wants us to enjoy life but always to remain focused on Him. Our moral and ethical compass should always point to Christ. The moment we profess to be Christians, our actions and lives are judged on a higher level by others. We become Christ “with skin on” to our friends, neighbors and family. Would they want to know Christ as their Savior after they see us?
We get to choose each morning how we will live and act each day. I think it is helpful to “set our hearts on things above” as we start our day. I know that time is dear each morning, but a few minutes of devotion, scripture and prayer can sure set the tone for the day and help us to remember that “I’m but a stranger here, Heav’n is my home”. Lord, God, we pray that our hearts and minds might be focused on you each day. Please be in the details of every part of our life. We ask that your Holy Spirit would lead us to focus always on your Heavenly kingdom as we enjoy our time on earth.
