…Thy Will Be Done… Matthew 6:10

These words are said by millions every week in The Lord’s Prayer. How often we just recite the words without giving much thought to them. But there is great power in them.

I find great comfort in these words. Not that by my asking, God will do his will.
Luther says in the Catechism: “God’s good and gracious will certainly is done without our prayer…” But these simple words remind me that His will is better than anything I can ask for, and He knows what is best for me. It helps me remember the many times that I prayed for something and God said no, or wait…only to find that His way was much better than mine.

Now God’s will may not be easy or comfortable for us. It may even be difficult to understand and endure at the time. Even Jesus prayed these words in the Garden before his suffering and death.

When things are darkest and you can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel, simply pray ‘Thy will be done’ and take comfort that it will be.

Lord, Thy will be done.
