For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 6:23

$8.00 for Jesus

I was at a senior center the other day doing some work for the city. As a civil employee, I work in almost all city-owned buildings, and I’ve seen some strange things and strange people. The center has a craft room where anyone can pick out a pre-made figurine, paint it in the style of their choice, and then bake it in a kiln, so the colors are permanent.

Each figurine has a price, a turtle for three dollars, and a coffee mug for two. Standing there amongst the other nick-knacks, readied to be “glamoured-up”, was a statue of Jesus. It was about eight inches high, standing with his arms outstretched. As I stared at the figure, I thought, “Wow, someone has finally put a price on Jesus…eight bucks”. And it made me wonder about our own view of Jesus. Have we put a price on our Savior and His message of truth, love, and forgiveness? Have we painted Him with the colors that suit our own sensibilities? Or do we allow the Son of God to show His true colors to us in the kiln of His Word, reflecting His light and burning His image on our minds?

If the wages of sin is death, how can we count the cost of what Jesus has done for us? To our Lord it was much more than eight dollars. Yet the cost to us is free.
