…“I have had enough, Lord” 1 Kings 19:4
Read 1 Kings 19:3-18
Elijah had just seen tremendous victory over the prophets of Baal. The Lord had just brought rain to end the famine in the land. Yet he wished to die. He prayed to die. Elijah experienced the depths of discouragement right after a great spiritual experience.
How often this happens to us. We experience amazing things, and then there is the letdown to discouragement. It is quite a roller coaster. These feelings can be amplified when starting a new church plant. But do not fear. God is still there. He is still working.
Forty days later, Elijah is still discouraged and complains to the Lord. He has worked hard, but thinks it is all for nothing. He says he is the only one left. He feels alone.
We feel discouraged. We complain and wonder if our efforts are all in vain. We feel tired. We want to give up.
God tells Elijah to stand in the presence of the Lord as He is about to pass by. First a powerful wind tears the mountain apart, but the Lord was not in the wind. Then an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. Next came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. Finally the Lord came in a gentle whisper.
Don’t look for God only in something big and spectacular. If you do, you may miss the gentle whisper. Listen for the whisper. Step back away from the noise. Listen humbly. Listen quietly. God may come to you when you least expect it.
